Prescription & Sharps Disposal

New York State, Veterinary Practices are not able to accept controlled substances as donations or to dispose of. Instead, they are required to be taken to an NYS-approved controlled substance disposal location. All medications dropped off at the take-back locations will be destroyed.

Non-Controlled Prescription Disposal

  • Remove the drugs from their original containers and mix them with something undesirable, such as used coffee grounds, dirt, or cat litter. This makes the medicine less appealing to children and animals.
  • Put the mixture in something you can close (a re-sealable zipper storage bag, empty can, or another container) to prevent the drug from leaking or spilling out.
  • Scratch out all your personal information on the empty medicine packaging to protect your identity and privacy.
  • Throw the container in the garbage.

Sharps Disposal

Sharps disposal includes lancets, insulin syringes, or other syringes.
